Market context

The HVAC market is reordering itself. So is the search demand.

Before tactics, the numbers that make the case. The global HVAC equipment market sits at roughly $300 billion in 2025, and published forecasts put it near $450 billion by 2032. The growth is not spread evenly. Heat pumps, connected controls, ventilation and IAQ products grow at two to three times the rate of legacy furnaces and rooftop units.

Every fast-moving segment carries a new standard, a new efficiency metric or a new refrigerant behind it, and every new name creates search demand. A2L refrigerant, TSPR, DCV, COP, IPLV, SEER2, GWP. These are not engineering trivia. They are the queries your future customers type into Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in the months before they write a specification.

Four structural forces are pushing demand, and each one changes what content wins:

  • 01Electrification policy. The AIM Act HFC phasedown, heat pump tax credits and rebates, state building codes and the UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme are moving whole product categories. Buyers search for eligibility and compliance, not just product specs.
  • 02Data center cooling. AI compute is multiplying heat loads per square foot, and data center cooling is the fastest growing application category in commercial HVAC. Equipment gets specified early, fast and with heavy documentation.
  • 03IAQ as a permanent line item. Ventilation rates, filtration classes and demand-controlled ventilation moved from optional to code. Energy recovery and filtration content now converts engineers who never searched for it before.
  • 04Workforce constraints. Fewer mechanical contractors and engineers means more decisions happen remotely, from search results, spec libraries and manufacturer websites. The digital asset is often the only sales rep the specifier ever meets.

The market grew roughly 13% between 2023 and 2025 and is projected to add another 50% by 2032. Most of that growth lands in heat pumps, electrified cooling and connected controls.

Fig. 02

Compound annual growth by segment

Approximate CAGR, 2025 to 2032. Marketing budget should follow the growth curve, not the installed base.

Heat pumps9.5%
Smart HVAC & controls8.5%
IAQ / ventilation7.5%
Chillers & VRF5.5%
Rooftop units & furnaces3.8%

Segments growing fastest are exactly the ones where buyers search by new standards and new technology names: A2L refrigerants, heat pump COP, demand control ventilation, grid-interactive controls.

What this means

Your marketing calendar should follow the growth curve, not the installed base. A manufacturer that leads with heat pump, A2L readiness, IAQ and data center cooling content captures demand that furnace-oriented competitors are not even targeting. The same content that ranks in Google gets quoted by AI engines, which is where an increasing share of specification research now starts.

SHEET 02

Two different businesses

Contractor marketing and manufacturer marketing share a word. Nothing else.

Most of what ranks for the phrase "HVAC marketing" is written for residential contractors. Local SEO, Google Local Services Ads, review velocity, truck wraps. That is a real discipline and it has nothing to do with your business model.

A residential contractor sells a short, local, service-driven transaction to a homeowner. An equipment manufacturer sells a long, project-based, specification-driven decision to engineers, contractors and owners. Different audience, different cycle, different channels, different content, different KPIs, different sales handoff. When we take on an HVAC manufacturer, the first thing we do is remove the contractor playbook from the room. It does not survive contact with a 24 month specification cycle.

Confusion cost

Hiring a contractor-focused agency means paying for local-lead tactics aimed at homeowners while your engineers search in a completely different language. Budget burns, nothing specifies.

What actually works

A manufacturer programme is built around one job: making sure your equipment is the easiest to find, verify, download and specify at the moment the engineer is writing the spec. That is the entire strategy, executed across channels.

SHEET 03

Buying committee

Five to nine people influence one specification. You market to all of them, differently.

Nobody buys a chiller. A project team specifies one. The people in that team research in different places, trust different sources and veto for different reasons.

  • MEPThe MEP engineer writes the specification. They search by standard number and efficiency metric, check the AHRI Directory, and pull your submittal and BIM object into the model. Your product data is their primary research tool.
  • GCThe mechanical contractor prices and installs. They care about availability, serviceability, lead time and the markup your distributor allows. They defend or substitute your product during procurement.
  • CxThe commissioning agent verifies performance against the spec after installation. Underperformance here becomes a warranty claim and a black mark on your brand in the next design meeting.
  • OWNThe owner and facility team operate the building for decades. They care about energy cost, maintenance contracts, parts availability and service network coverage. Their preferences carry into the next project.
  • ENVThe energy consultant and sustainability lead check LEED, BREEAM, TSPR compliance and embodied or operational carbon claims. They can remove your product from consideration on a single compliance miss.

Each role researches on a different channel and each has independent veto power. That is why HVAC manufacturer marketing is a channel mix, not a channel choice. Use the tabs below for the four commercial segments we build programmes for, because the same role differs in weight depending on who sells what.

Who buys

HVAC distributors and dealers, big-box retail programs, home builders, utilities running rebate programs.

Buying cycle

Months. Dealers write the order, but ENERGY STAR, SEER2 and rebate eligibility decide which brand they stock.

Standards that matter

AHRI 210/240, DOE 10 CFR 430, ENERGY STAR Most Efficient, MCS (UK), Part L (UK)

Channels that win

Channel marketing to distributors, dealer locator SEO, rebate landing pages, brand search defense, comparison content vs named competitors.

Content specifiers use

Rebate lookup tools, sizing calculators, dealer locator, spec sheets dealers can hand to homeowners, ENERGY STAR certification pages.

Search queries to win

seer2 vs eer2, 2025 tax credit heat pump, r-454b vs r-410a, 5 ton heat pump ahri certified

SHEET 04

The specification process

Six steps decide every sale. Marketing wins or loses in three of them.

Every HVAC product sale follows the same project path, and the marketing job is different at each step. Know the path before you spend on channels.

01

Schematic design

The engineer sketches systems and shortlists equipment that can meet the load and the code. Search results and BIM libraries decide the shortlist.

02

Design development

The engineer locks the system concept and writes the specification sections. Performance data, standards compliance and energy model output decide who makes the cut.

03

Specification and bid

The engineer names acceptable manufacturers in Division 23. Named means invited to bid. Not named means you do not exist on this project.

04

Submittal review

The contractor submits your product for approval. Package accuracy, response speed and completeness decide whether the approval comes back clean.

05

Value engineering

A cheaper substitute appears during procurement. Your documented performance, life-cycle cost and compliance data are the only defense.

06

Commissioning and operation

Performance is verified against the spec. The owner forms the opinion that drives the next project, and the next, and the next.

Marketing touches all six steps, but the real weight sits in schematic design, design development and value engineering. Win the shortlist, win the specification, and hold the line in procurement. That is where a single asset, a TSPR compliance page or a chiller part-load curve, pays for itself many times over.

Before you add channel budget, check whether your website can survive this process at all. Most manufacturer sites fail at step one or step four before any advertising can help.

Interactive audit

The Specifier Test: does your website win specifications?

Twelve yes or no questions. Honest answers only. Answer all twelve to get your score.

01

You publish a dedicated page for every AHRI, ASHRAE, ENERGY STAR and DOE rating you hold.

02

Efficiency ratings (SEER2, EER2, HSPF2, COP, IPLV) appear in structured data, not only in PDFs.

03

You offer BIM/Revit families at LOD 300 or higher for your commercial products.

04

A specifier can download a submittal in two clicks without giving up an email address.

05

You publish 3-part CSI/MasterSpec guide specifications engineers can copy into project manuals.

06

You have current, detailed content on the A2L refrigerant transition and your product line status.

07

Your pages rank for standard-number queries like "ASHRAE 90.1 TSPR chiller" or "AHRI 550 COP".

08

Your case studies are organized by building type and application, not just by product.

09

Product pages cite and link to your AHRI Directory listings instead of just claiming certification.

10

BIM downloads, spec page visits and submittal downloads enter your CRM as scored opportunities.

11

Your technical answers are structured so ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can cite them.

12

Your distributor and rep network has branded digital tools for spec conversations.

SHEET 05

Standards and certifications

Standards are your search keywords. Certifications are your proof.

HVAC is one of the few industries where the buyer's search query is often a standard number. "ASHRAE 90.1 TSPR compliant chiller". "AHRI 920 DOAS unit". "SMACNA Class 3 duct". Every one of those searches means an engineer is actively writing a specification. Generalist agencies never see this opportunity because they search for "HVAC marketing" and build content that nobody in your industry types.

Every certification you hold is a page you should own in Google and a citation AI engines should pull. The table below maps the standards that drive specification-stage search to the products they cover, the intent behind the query, the funnel stage and the content format that wins the search.

This is the exact taxonomy we use when we build SEO programmes for HVAC manufacturers: one owned page per standard, one full answer per question, one citation path per certification record.

The fastest-growing row in that table is A2L refrigerants, which is also the row most HVAC manufacturer websites have not written yet. Volume is rising while competition is still thin. That gap is the single best content opportunity in HVAC marketing right now. See our HVAC SEO services for the full standard-by-standard build sequence.

SHEET 06

The A2L refrigerant transition

The biggest repositioning moment in HVAC marketing since SEER2.

The 2025 model year changed the North American residential market in one stroke. New air conditioners and heat pumps ship with mildly flammable A2L refrigerants, mostly R-454B and R-32, because the AIM Act phasedown made R-410A scarce and expensive. Commercial equipment follows on a rolling schedule.

This is not a regulatory footnote. It is a content event. Buyers are searching for "r-454b vs r-410a", "A2L refrigerant training", "is my r-410a unit compatible" and "low GWP chiller" in numbers that did not exist three years ago. The manufacturers who answer first own those queries, the AI citations and the specification conversations that follow.

The timeline below shows what happened and what comes next, with the marketing play for each milestone.

Interactive timeline

The A2L refrigerant transition, 2020 to 2036

Click a milestone to read what it means for your marketing and spec positioning.

2025

Industry switches to R-454B

The 2025 model year is built around A2L refrigerants. Carrier, Trane, Daikin, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Bosch and most major lines launch R-454B systems. R-410A stays legal to service but new production is capped.

Marketing play

Every product page needs an A2L spec line, an R-454B vs R-410A comparison, and a "is my old unit compatible" answer. Buyers search this exact question by the tens of thousands.

GWP

Every product page needs a global warming potential value and an A2L safety class line. It is now part of standard spec data.

Retrofit

Serviceable R-410A units still run for a decade or more. Content that answers compatibility questions captures the service and replacement market.

Training

Contractors must handle A2L safely. A manufacturer that publishes installer training and code references wins installer loyalty and repeat specs.

SHEET 07

The six-channel mix that actually moves HVAC specifications.

No single channel wins a specification. The mix does. Each channel below has a different job, a different timeline and a different cost profile. The table is the map. Each row links to a dedicated service page with the tactical depth behind it.

SHEET 08

Content and BIM

Content is not blog posts. It is the documentation engineers build with.

For an HVAC manufacturer, the content assets that win specifications are the ones that mirror the design and permitting workflow. A blog post about "energy efficiency trends" will never be opened by a specifier. A submittal-ready package, a BIM family with embedded performance data, a guide specification and a certification page will be opened on every project where your category is in play.

The asset stack, in order of impact:

  • BIMBIM and Revit families at LOD 300 to 400. The family carries geometry, performance curves, wiring data and the product URL. Distributed through BIMobject, NBS Source, ARCAT and your own portal, every download is a named lead with a project behind it. Engineers build your equipment into the model, and what is in the model tends to stay in the specification.
  • CERTCertification and standards pages. One page per standard: AHRI 550/590 for chillers, ASHRAE 90.1 TSPR compliance, SMACNA class, DOE minimum efficiency. Each page states the rating, the test method, the GWP and the verification link. This is the content Google ranks and AI engines cite.
  • SUBSubmittal packages and guide specs. A specifier should be able to pull your submittal in two clicks and copy a 3-part CSI specification into the project manual. Substitution becomes legally and practically harder when your spec language is already in the document.
  • CALCCalculators and selection tools. Sizing, payback, energy cost, refrigerant charge. Tools get bookmarked, shared and re-opened. A payback calculator used by an energy consultant on three projects is worth more than a year of display ads.
  • CASECase studies organized by building type. Hospital, data center, school, manufacturing plant. Engineers search for proof inside their own sector, and a building-type case study answers that search faster than a generic success story.

The same assets power every other channel. They are the pages SEO ranks, the landing pages PPC clicks land on, the content ABM sends to target accounts and the documentation trade show visitors ask about. If the asset stack is weak, every other channel leaks. See the full production system in our HVAC content marketing services.

SHEET 09

SEO and generative engine optimization

Ranking in Google is table stakes. Being cited by AI engines is the new win.

Specification-stage SEO for HVAC manufacturers follows a simple principle: every standard number, every certification, every efficiency metric and every refrigerant name is a keyword cluster. One page per cluster, written as a direct answer, marked up with schema, linked from the product pages and the AHRI Directory.

The technical checklist we run on manufacturer sites:

  • 01Standards pages in plain HTML, not PDF-only. Rating tables, GWP values and test methods machine-readable.
  • 02Product pages that answer "is this AHRI certified", "what is the SEER2", "which refrigerant" with one sentence and one table.
  • 03FAQ schema on standards and refrigerant pages so Google and AI engines can lift the answer directly.
  • 04Submittal, BIM and spec download pages that rank, not just exist behind a distributor login.
  • 05Internal links between certification, product and case study pages so authority flows to the money pages.

Then comes the part most agencies still ignore: generative engine optimization. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews do not read your website the way a human does. They extract answers from the most clearly structured, data-dense, citable pages. When an engineer asks an AI engine which AHRI certified chiller suits a hospital retrofit, the answer cites the source that is easiest to parse. Structuring your ratings, compliance data and refrigerant values so AI engines can cite them is now a ranking factor in a different engine, and the traffic it sends arrives already qualified.

We have written the full playbooks for both. Start with our HVAC SEO services and the Google AI Overview guide for manufacturers, or the GEO strategy for manufacturers.

Google

Classic rankings for standard-number queries, certification pages and product pages. Slow to build, compounding forever.

AI Overviews

Google now answers specifier questions above the blue links. Your content either becomes the cited source or disappears beneath it.

ChatGPT / Perplexity / Gemini

Engineers increasingly start research in AI tools. These engines cite structured, quotable manufacturer content.

SHEET 10

Paid search

PPC for HVAC manufacturers is a scalpel, not a broadside.

Consumer-grade HVAC keywords are expensive, seasonal and full of contractors bidding them up. Specification-stage keywords are the opposite: low volume, low competition, high intent. A query like "AHRI certified 20 ton rooftop unit" or "low GWP chiller specification" comes from someone mid-specification, and there are usually only a handful of advertisers bidding at all.

Where paid search earns its keep for a manufacturer:

  • 01Spec-intent capture. Bid on standard, product-type and application queries your organic pages do not yet rank for. This is the fastest way to appear where the engineer is searching today.
  • 02Brand defense. Your brand name, your model numbers and your distributor names should never be lost to a competitor buying your terms. This is cheap insurance and often the single highest-ROI campaign.
  • 03Retargeting specifiers. The engineer who visited your chiller page and left without downloading will see your case study and BIM content across the web for weeks. Follow-up advertising works because the research cycle is long.
  • 04Launch support. When a new product or a new refrigerant line launches, PPC accelerates the first 90 days of discovery while organic catches up.

The rule we enforce: never send paid traffic to a page that cannot answer the specifier. PPC on a thin product page burns budget and credibility. Paid search runs on top of the asset stack, never instead of it. Full campaign architecture in our HVAC PPC services.

SHEET 11

LinkedIn account-based marketing

Most of your revenue comes from a few dozen firms. Market to them by name.

In most HVAC categories, a small set of engineering and consulting firms writes a large share of the specifications in your region. LinkedIn ABM is built for exactly that shape: a concentrated market, a long cycle and a professional network where the decision-makers are present and reachable.

The ABM programme we run for manufacturers:

  • 01Account selection. The 30 to 50 MEP, mechanical and consulting firms that dominate spec volume in your target territory, scored by project type and revenue.
  • 02Sponsored content. BIM availability, certification updates, A2L readiness and building-type case studies served to the engineers, principals and sustainability leads inside those firms.
  • 03Direct outreach. Your engineers and sales team connect with target specifiers with a specific technical reason, not a pitch. A new BIM family, a CEU session, a compliance answer.
  • 04Employee advocacy. Your applications engineers, QA managers and BIM coordinators are the people specifiers trust. Their LinkedIn activity multiplies reach inside the accounts you target.

ABM builds relationships 6 to 18 months before a tender appears. By the time a project is in design, your team is already known to the people writing the spec. Full programme design in our HVAC social media and ABM services.

SHEET 12

Trade shows and rep networks

AHR Expo and your reps are part of the digital funnel, not apart from it.

The AHR Expo is the annual center of gravity for HVACR, moving between Chicago and Orlando in its current cycle. A booth there costs real money, and most exhibitors treat it as a standalone event. That is the mistake. The show works when digital campaigns surround it before, during and after.

  • PREPre-show. A LinkedIn campaign targeting the specifiers who attended last year, plus email to your CRM with a personalized booth invitation and a preview of what you are launching. Meetings get booked before the floor opens.
  • SHOWOn-site. A QR-to-submittal or QR-to-BIM flow on the booth turns foot traffic into tracked downloads. No paper, no lost business cards, full CRM attribution.
  • POSTPost-show. The follow-up within 48 hours is where most exhibitors fail. Automated emails with the exact content discussed, LinkedIn connection requests from the people they met, and retargeting for visitors who did not leave contact details.

Reps need the same digital enablement. A rep in a GC preconstruction meeting should pull up your BIM library and case studies on a tablet. A dealer responding to an RFP should download factory QA docs from a branded portal. Build the assets and give the channel tools, or the content sits unused.

SHEET 13

Budget and sequencing

The order of investment matters more than the total budget.

Spending paid search before the infrastructure exists means paying for clicks that land on pages that cannot convert a specifier. Running ABM before the BIM library is published means driving target accounts to an empty website. The wrong sequence burns budget and credibility with exactly the people you need to impress.

The sequence that repeatedly works:

  • M1-3Infrastructure. Technical SEO foundation, certification pages, submittal and BIM assets, CRM tracking. The capital investment before the channels switch on.
  • M4-9Discovery. Organic content expansion, BIM distribution across BIMobject and NBS Source, PPC on spec-intent gaps, ABM at 20 to 30 target accounts.
  • M10-18Scale. ABM expansion, deeper PPC, trade show beats, rep enablement. First named specifications land and the compounding assets keep working without incremental spend.

Pressure-test your own allocation with the tool below. It normalizes your split and flags the sequence your mix implies.

Recommended sequence

Infrastructure first sequence

Your mix leans on SEO, content and CRM. That matches the order that works for HVAC manufacturers: build the spec-ready infrastructure in months 1 to 3, let organic discovery ramp through months 4 to 9, then add PPC and ABM on top once you have pages that convert. This is the lowest-waste sequence for a 12 to 24 month spec cycle.

Directional model based on the campaign architectures we run for HVAC and mechanical equipment manufacturers. Real results vary by product line, geography and starting point. Use it to pressure-test an allocation, then let a channel audit replace the guesswork.

SHEET 14

Measurement

Measure specifications, not sessions. Everything else is theater.

A consumer agency reports impressions and sessions. A manufacturer marketing programme reports movement through the specification funnel. The metrics below are the ones we put on the reporting dashboard, because they trace directly to revenue.

KPIs for HVAC manufacturer marketing programmes
StageKPIWhy it matters
SearchRankings for standard-number and product-type keywordsVisibility where the specifier researches
EngagementBIM downloads, submittal downloads, spec page viewsProof your documentation is being used in projects
VerificationCertification page sessions and AHRI Directory referral clicksThe engineer checking your claim before writing it
PipelineQualified RFQs with project name and stage attachedReal revenue opportunities, not raw leads
RevenueNamed specifications in project manualsThe only metric that proves you won
RetentionSpec mention rate across repeat project typesThe compounding effect of owning a category

Lead routing is part of measurement. Every BIM download and spec page visit should carry the project name and stage into your CRM and reach the right rep with a defined follow-up protocol. Without it, marketing reports leads and sales reports none. See the routing design in our HVAC lead generation services.

SHEET 15

Questions

Frequently asked questions about HVAC manufacturer marketing

How is digital marketing for HVAC manufacturers different from marketing for HVAC contractors?
Completely different audiences and funnels. A contractor sells installation jobs to homeowners, with a local buying cycle measured in weeks. A manufacturer sells equipment through distributors and specification, with a buying cycle of 12 to 24 months where the decision happens when an MEP engineer writes the specification, not when a purchase order is cut. Channels differ too. Contractor marketing leans on local SEO, Google Local Services Ads and review volume. Manufacturer marketing leans on technical SEO for standard-number searches, BIM content, certification pages, specifier ABM and trade shows. We run both, but the programmes have almost nothing in common.
What are the most important SEO keywords for an HVAC manufacturer?
The highest converting queries are standard-driven: 'ASHRAE 90.1 TSPR compliant chiller', 'AHRI 550 centrifugal chiller COP', 'AHRI 920 DOAS unit', 'A2L refrigerant rooftop unit', 'SEER2 vs EER2'. Volume is lower than consumer terms, but each search comes from someone writing a specification. A page that answers the standard question and links to the certification record, the submittal and the BIM object converts at rates generalist content cannot match.
How long until HVAC manufacturer marketing produces results?
Plan for 9 to 18 months for the first named specifications, with leading indicators much sooner. Months 1 to 3 build the infrastructure: certification pages, submittal access, technical SEO. Months 3 to 8 produce first rankings for standard-number keywords and first BIM downloads. Months 8 to 18 produce the first RFQs and specifications in active projects. The assets keep working. A well-structured certification page or BIM object keeps generating specifier inquiries for years after publication.
Should an HVAC manufacturer invest in SEO or paid search first?
SEO first, in almost every case. PPC captures existing demand, and for an HVAC manufacturer the demand that exists in year one is mostly consumer-grade and thin-margin. The spec-stage demand you need is still being created by your own content and BIM library. The sequence that works: build the technical content and SEO foundation, let organic discovery start, then add PPC to catch the high-intent queries you do not yet rank for and to defend your brand name. Spending PPC budget before the pages exist means paying for clicks that bounce.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO) for HVAC manufacturers?
GEO is the practice of making your technical answers the ones that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews quote. AI engines pull from the most clearly structured, data-dense, citable sources. For an HVAC manufacturer that means publishing full answers to specifier questions in plain HTML, not only PDFs, keeping tables of ratings and GWP values machine-readable, adding FAQ and schema markup, and stating numbers and standards explicitly. When an engineer asks an AI engine which AHRI certified chiller suits a hospital, the engine cites the source it can parse. We structure content so that source is you.
What should an HVAC manufacturer spend on marketing?
Industrial B2B marketers typically allocate 1 to 3% of revenue, and manufacturers in specification-driven categories 3 to 6% when they are growing or launching new products. For a $20M HVAC manufacturer that is roughly $500k to $1.2M a year, or $40k to $100k a month. The mix matters more than the total. 30 to 50% should sit in content and SEO infrastructure in the first year because those assets compound, while PPC and ABM scale once the pages exist.
How does the A2L refrigerant transition affect HVAC marketing?
It is the biggest content and positioning shift in a generation. Every product page now needs an A2L status line, a GWP value and an R-454B versus R-410A comparison. Buyers search 'r-454b vs r-410a', 'A2L refrigerant training' and 'is my r-410a unit compatible'. Manufacturers who published this content early own the search results and the AI citations. Those who wait will spend 2026 defending outdated pages.
What does an HVAC manufacturer marketing agency actually do?
Builds the digital infrastructure that makes your equipment easy to specify and hard to substitute. That means technical SEO across certification and standard pages, BIM and Revit content distribution, spec sheet and submittal systems, PPC on specification-intent queries, LinkedIn ABM to engineering and consulting firms, trade show integration and lead routing to your reps. The deliverable is not traffic. It is named specifications and RFQs you can trace to specific content assets.
